Sign In, Backup and Sync for a Busy Food Diary App

A food diary app on iOS and Android, getting about 12,000 downloads a day by the client's account, needed its new sign in, backup and sync features tested thoroughly. The work continued for three years.

The brief

The app was maturing and its new sign in, backup and sync features had just been finished. The client wanted a senior tester to analyse the test scenarios systematically and test the features thoroughly on both platforms. Their job post asked applicants for their top concerns with a feature like this, and for their approach.

Why features like this are hard

Sign in, backup and sync touch a person's own records, so the failures that matter most are quiet ones: an entry that never syncs, a restore that overwrites newer data, a second device that shows a different history, or a sign in that strands someone's existing entries. Nobody reports those as crashes. People just stop trusting the app.

Finding them means planning scenarios across devices, accounts, interrupted connections and timing, not tapping through the happy path once on each phone.

What we did

  • Analysed the test scenarios for the new sign in, backup and sync features.
  • Tested the features on iOS and Android.
  • Continued with functional, usability and manual testing for the rest of the three year engagement.

How it went

The engagement ran for three years and closed with a 5.0 rating.
